Emergency Services

Christian Hospital Emergency Services -- 314.653.5994
Northwest HealthCare Emergency Services -- 314.953.6994

When a medical emergency occurs, Christian Hospital and Northwest HealthCare have you covered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with expert doctors and nurses who have extensive training and experience in emergency medicine.

Christian Hospital operates one of the busiest emergency departments in the state, and is noted for its excellence in emergency medicine. The hospital's emergency medical services (EMS) department operates a fleet of basic and advanced life-support ambulances and a heliport. And Christian Hospital’s Chest Pain Center is dedicated to offering all of the cardiac services needed to facilitate rapid diagnosis and treatment for heart attacks.

Our emergency services exceed all state and national best practice averages relating to emergency care for heart attack and congestive heart failure, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

HeartWatch Takes Heart Attack Care to the Scene
The sooner heart attacks are treated, the better the outcome. Our HeartWatch program and Heart Attack Rapid Response Team facilitate the diagnosis of heart attacks at the scene.

12-lead EKG equipment.

Eight advanced ambulances are equipped with 12-lead EKG machines -- the same used in Emergency Departments -- to begin diagnostic work immediately at the scene. The patient's EKG is transmitted via fax, phone or Bluetooth wireless technology to our Emergency Department.

While the ambulance is en route to the Hospital, our Heart Attack Rapid Response Team -- physicians, cardiologists, cardiac catheterization and intervention lab staff -- is activated, preparing for the patient's arrival.

"We're a mobile emergency room when it comes to treating a heart patient," says Kevin Altman, EMS ambulance paramedic. "We cover 110 square miles in north county and we run almost 30,000 calls a year and see a lot of cardiac and respiratory patients."
