Hyperbaric oxygen therapy at Christian Hospital

The Wound Care Center offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a treatment in which the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen while enclosed in a pressurized chamber. The treatment helps the body's own wound-healing abilities function more efficiently.

Above is Director Susan Burch with the center's two hyperbaric chambers.

The Christian Hospital Wound Care Center offers the most advanced therapies available to treat chronic wounds. Our comprehensive approach can heal wounds that have resisted other treatments, helping to avoid loss of limbs and reduce recurrence.

The outpatient program at the Wound Care Center works with you and your doctor to deliver:

  • Advanced therapies
  • Proven clinical protocols
  • A comprehensive plan of care providing the most appropriate and effective treatments for your unique needs
  • Assessment and care by our skilled team of wound care specialists, including a case manager who oversees every aspect of your case
  • Thorough wound-care training for you and your family
  • Education materials and resources on prevention, nutrition, hygiene and other topics for you and your family
  • Ongoing communication so that you and your doctor stay informed on all aspects of your healing

Optimal Outcomes
The science behind the Wound Care Center is time-tested and clinically proven to be one of the most effective treatments available. The same clinical therapies and approaches that we employ are used at more than 100 Wound Care Centers across the nation with outstanding results:

  • 95 percent patient satisfaction rate
  • 90 percent healing rate
  • 84 percent limb salvage rate

For patients, these results mean fewer re-hospitalizations, a reduced likelihood of prolonged or permanent disability, and an improved quality of life.

FAQs
How do I get help from the Wound Care Center?
Call the Wound Care Center directly, or get a referral from your doctor. To make an appointment, call 314.653.4076.

Do I need to change doctors?
No. The Wound Care Center works with your personal physician in the same way we would any medical specialist. We keep your doctor informed on all aspects of your treatment with frequent progress reports. While you receive treatment from the Wound Care Center, you'll continue to receive all of your routine care from your physician.

Does insurance cover treatment?
Many health plans cover Wound Care Center treatments. We can help you determine what your plan covers.

What can I expect at the first appointment?
The first appointment consists of an in-depth assessment by our wound care team, a review of your medical history, blood tests or additional tests if needed, and recommendations for your treatment plan. Please bring your medical records, insurance card, a list of all medications you are taking, and a list of your allergies to the first appointment.

What causes non-healing wounds?
Approximately 3-5 million Americans experience chronic and non-healing wounds. These wounds can result from a number of factors, including diabetes, poor circulation, trauma, vascular disease and immobility (which can lead to pressure ulcers, commonly known as bedsores). People with diabetes are at particular risk.

The Wound Care Center uses the most advanced therapies available for healing, but also addresses the underlying cause of the wound -- for example, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, hygiene, ill-fitting shoes -- to help eliminate recurrence.
