The federal government's Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released data ranking Christian Hospital as the only St. Louis area hospital in Missouri's Top 10 for all three measurements of clinical performance.
Christian Hospital is:
- Number 1 in the St. Louis metro area for having the lowest mortality rate for heart attack patients
- Number 2 in Missouri for having the lowest mortality rate for heart attack patients
- Number 4 among all hospitals in Missouri for having the lowest death rate for pneumonia patients
- Number 10 in the state for having the lowest heart failure death rate
The CMS based these rankings on a risk-adjustment formula, which takes into account differences in the hospitals' patient mix, so comparison will be fair. The formula focuses on all deaths of heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia patients that occur within 30 days of a patient's admission to a hospital.
"These high rankings are due to the great clinical advancements taking place at Christian Hospital," says hospital president Ron McMullen. "In addition to the CMS findings, Christian Hospital has scored in the top 25 percent of all hospitals nationally in the publicly reported Core Measures of clinical quality during the past 18 months. Our year-to-date performance continues to be better than the top 25 percent of all the hospitals in the country."
