In 1983, the first open heart surgery in a St. Louis area community hospital was performed right here at Christian Hospital – and now, more than 5,000 heart procedures are performed here each year.
Physicians from all over the region refer their patients to Christian Hospital because of our long history of advanced cardiac care, responsiveness and our track record of clinical excellence.
Prevention and Education
To try to catch heart disease before it starts, we perform thousands of heart health screenings, provide free nutrition and wellness classes and host one of the region’s largest heart fairs each year.
HeartWatch Rapid Response Team
Because the sooner heart attacks are treated, the better the outcome, our HeartWatch program speeds heart attack diagnosis. Fourteen advanced ambulances are equipped with 12-lead EKG machines to diagnose a heart attack at the scene. The patient's EKG is transmitted via fax, phone or Bluetooth wireless technology to our Emergency Department.
While the ambulance is en route to the Hospital, our HeartWatch Team -- physicians, cardiologists, cardiac catheterization and intervention lab staff -- is activated, preparing for the patient's arrival.
Cardiac events don’t adhere to a convenient schedule. That’s why our Cardiac Catheterization Lab operates around the clock, seven days a week, performing diagnostic procedures to determine the extent of disease in the vascular system and provide interventional treatment, if necessary.
Academic Excellence in a Community Hospital Setting
Should you need treatment, Christian Hospital’s outstanding team of cardiothoracic surgeons is world renown, with the specialized training and experience to perform the most complex heart surgery procedures. In addition to practicing exclusively at Christian Hospital, our heart surgeons are professors of surgery at Washington University School of Medicine – ranked among the top medical schools nationally.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
Diagnosis and treatment are just the first two parts of the cardiac care process. Our Cardiac Wellness Center helps patients return to their daily lives through carefully monitored cardiac rehabilitation and fitness programs tailored to the individual's needs.
After an initial screening and evaluation, patients begin a safe, personalized cardiac conditioning program. In addition, nurses educate patients about their heart risk factors and how to make lifestyle changes to promote a healthy heart.
Rehabilitation and fitness programs at the Cardiac Wellness Center are available on an outpatient basis.
