Symptom Management is Your Best Medicine

At Christian Hospital, patients have access to comprehensive, individualized treatment for diabetes. Our team of physicians, dietitians and certified diabetes educators provide personalized plans that allow patients to manage symptoms and regain control over the disease.

While diabetes has no cure, it can be managed through diet, weight control, exercise and medication. Our team works one-on-one with each patient to create a personalized plan. Endocrinologists work closely with diabetic patients to control their blood sugar with diet and medications, including insulin. Certified diabetes educators ensure our patients have the knowledge and resources necessary for continuous at-home care.

Diabetes Management and Prevention

The exact cause of diabetes is unknown. However, genetics and lifestyle are contributing factors. While there is no known way to prevent type 1 diabetes, which is a chronic condition most often diagnosed in childhood, there are ways to prevent type 2 diabetes by leading a healthier lifestyle, which is particularly important for people with a family history.

The two key factors for diabetes prevention are getting at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity, such as walking fast or biking five days a week, and eating a variety of foods that are low in fat, salt and sugar and reducing the number of calories you eat daily.

Diabetes workshops are provided by Oasis, a non-profit educational organization. Find classes in your area by visiting Oasis St. Louis and searching keyword “diabetes.”
