What is Varicose Vein Ablation?
Varicose vein ablation is a minimally invasive procedure where doctors use heat (radiofrequency energy) to treat varicose veins. The heat damages the wall of the vein and scar tissue forms to close the vein.
Side Effects of Varicose Vein Ablation
The following are common side effects of varicose vein ablation:
- Skin burns
- Nerve damage
- Blood clots
How is Varicose Vein Ablation Performed?
Varicose vein ablation can be performed in an outpatient or in-office setting by a doctor who specializes in varicose vein ablation.
During the procedure, the doctor makes a small incision in the vein and uses radiofrequency energy inserted through a catheter to damage the vein wall causing scar tissue to form. The scar tissue then closes up the vein and the procedure is completed.
