Christian Hospital was the first community hospital in the St. Louis region to perform open-heart surgery. Today, more than 5,000 heart surgeries and other related procedures are performed annually.

Our cardiothoracic surgeons have years of specialized training, and are experienced in performing the most complex surgical procedures. Our program is affiliated with the nationally renowned Washington University School of Medicine, bringing academic excellence to a community hospital setting.

Nabil Munfakh, MD 
Dr. Munfakh is director of the cardiothoracic surgery program at Christian Hospital and a professor of surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. He is board-certified in surgery, thoracic surgery and medical examinations. Dr. Munfakh has a special interest in mitral valve repair, and expertise in esophageal surgery. 

Stefano Schena, MD, PhD 
Dr. Schena joined the Christian Hospital medical staff in 2011. He completed his surgical training at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine and his training in cardiothoracic surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine. He has a special interest in minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic surgery, and cardiovascular trauma. He is an expert in endovascular and peripheral vascular surgery.
