PET Scan allows physicians to see how the organs and tissues inside the body are currently functioning.
The PET scanner is a doughnut shaped machine that produces three-dimensional pictures of the body. This allows the physicians to look at cross-sectional images of the body at any angle. The benefit of a PET scan over a MRI or CT scan is that a PET scan can see abnormalities at a cellular level. This allows doctors to detect the disease sooner whereas the MRI or CT would start to detect the disease after it has already caused changes in the structure of the organs.
