The Respiratory Care Unit (RCU) is a 10-bed department dedicated to patients with lung disease. Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team of health professionals experienced with this specialized group of patients.
The RCU includes:
- Central nurses' station
- Three semi-private rooms
- Multipurpose room for exercising and education
- A four-bed ventilator care room with a dedicated nurses' station and equipment for medically stable patients requiring ventilator support
"We develop exercise programs for patients, and educate them and their families so they understand the medical problem," says Doug Zweig, MD, pulmonologist. "Our goal is to decrease the length of the hospital stay and reduce the likelihood of re-admission."
Six Christian Hospital pulmonologists coordinate the efforts of the care team and manage patient medications to treat the underlying lung disorders. The RCU's team of specialists also includes:
- Physical therapists
- Occupational therapists
- Respiratory therapists
- Social workers
Upon discharge, outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation is available at Christian Hospital's Breathing Center at Northwest HealthCare.

Low-Dose CT Scanning
Christian Hospital offers low-dose CT imaging technology to help provide an earlier diagnosis of lung cancer. Studies show a 20 percent reduction in lung cancer deaths when low-dose, non-contrasted CT imaging is used. The improvement is essentially due to earlier stage diagnosis and healing action for earlier stage cancer. Learn more >
