What is a Hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a woman’s uterus. The surgery is performed to treat many diseases or conditions of the reproductive organs in women. A hysterectomy can be performed either by an open procedure or using a minimally invasive procedure.

The following are common reasons why a woman gets a hysterectomy.

  • Endometriosis
  • Adenomyosis
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding

Types of Hysterectomies

  • Subtotal hysterectomy: removal of upper part of the uterus

What to Expect After a Hysterectomy

After a hysterectomy, a woman will need to abstain from sex and avoid lifting heavy objects for at least 6 weeks after surgery. If a woman’s ovaries were removed a woman will enter menopause. If the ovaries weren’t removed a woman may enter menopause at an earlier age than she would have normally.
